The only true believers are those who are free not to be...
A young girl witnesses the destruction that warring factions unleash on humanity. They demand that individuals embrace their collective beliefs or suffer deadly punishment. The young girl’s reluctant odyssey sees her confront the rival factions on their battlefield and boldy challenge their casus belli with logic and reason.
But her foes dismiss her with ad feminam insults, and the slaughter continues. As the girl grieves, a forgotten hero rescues her from our doomed world before she witnesses its final destruction. From a sanctuary of peace and rational thinking, both she and the reader now reflect on a galactic museum’s guided history of humankind, to conclude that the destruction of our civilization was inevitable. Or was it? Could we really have saved ourselves? How?
Inspired by the enigmatic 1967 television series The Prisoner and other monuments to independent thought, Odyssey in White Satin offers an efficient but evocative analysis of persistent historical currents that have shaped humanity but could possibly lead to our demise. It is a must-read for fans and scholars of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s masterpiece, The Little Prince.
Enjoy the museum, but beware of Exhibit 666.Odyssey in White Satin Otanes 9781503056923 Books
It’s a good, thoughtful story, but the author admits (in the epilogue) that he deliberately set out to keep it short. It may be too short: I finished it in 45 minutes. I would have preferred more dialogue; too much narrative gets boring without it. However, I highly recommend this book, especially to those who are looking for something original, imaginative, intellectually challenging and historically informative without being verbose. Provocative, too, when I think of the museum’s Exhibit 666; that was quite clever.I had heard of most of the heroes and villains (Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Mullah Omar, Galileo, and others), but had never heard of Rhazes or Emperor Theodosius II. In fact, the latter was quite a revelation, as was the original Otanes. And yes, I checked out the lesser-known ones via multiple sources on the internet; there is consensus out there for the conclusions the author has drawn from history. It’s quite remarkable that he was able to fit so much into such a small package with a commendably coherent narrative. At first, the ending seemed far-fetched, but in the light of current events in the middle east and elsewhere, and the general trend of history from the time of the original Otanes, I must admit it has given me food for further thought.
It’s a thoughtful, well-written story. If your commute is 45 minutes or more, you could finish this book before you start work. it's well worth it.
